The Downsides of PPF: What Nobody Tells You Before You Pay
Not every complaint about PPF is a myth, and not every myth is a complaint. An honest look at the real problems and how to avoid them.
Most articles about paint protection film exist to sell it to you. This one is different — we install PPF, and we are still going to tell you its real downsides, because customers who understand what is coming end up far happier than customers who were promised the impossible.
The genuine downsides
1. Cost
The most obvious and most honest one. PPF is not cheap, and full-body coverage on a large vehicle is a serious investment. On an older car, or one you plan to sell soon, the maths may simply not work in your favour.
2. Visible film edges
Film terminates somewhere on every panel. Skilled installation wraps edges inside the panel so they disappear; rushed installation leaves visible lines under direct light. This is an installation flaw, not a product flaw.
3. Yellowing over time
A very real problem — with cheap film. Egyptian sun is punishing, and film without proper UV inhibitors can yellow within a year or two and end up looking worse than bare paint. Certified films resist this for years, and that is a large part of the price difference.
4. Peeling and bubbling
Two causes: poor adhesive, or poor surface preparation. If the surface was not perfectly clean at installation, adhesion fails months later.
5. Film locks in existing defects
Rarely mentioned: film is transparent, so any scratch or oxidation present before installation stays visible — and now sits sealed underneath. Preparation and correction beforehand are not optional extras.
6. Removal requires a professional
Removing film years later takes heat and patience. Aggressive pulling can lift paint, particularly on panels that were previously resprayed.
Common claims that are not true
- "Film damages paint": false with good material and correct installation. Bad removal and cheap adhesive cause damage.
- "It prevents all scratches": also false, in the other direction. Film absorbs light and moderate impacts; a deep gouge still reaches paint.
- "You will never need to wash the car": you will.
How to avoid all of it
Ask for the film brand and confirm it is certified. Demand a written warranty that names yellowing and peeling specifically. Ask whether paint correction is included before installation. Inspect the centre's previous work, focusing on the edges. And do not rush the shop — good installation takes time.
