Paint Protection Film

PPF Finishes Explained: Gloss, Matte and Coloured Film

Same protection, completely different look. How the finishes differ, which suits your car, and what you cannot undo later.

Once you decide to install paint protection film, the next decision is finish — and it changes your car's appearance completely, along with the care it will need.

Gloss film

The most popular choice. Fully transparent, preserving the original paint appearance so completely that most people never notice film is fitted.

Best for: anyone wanting protection without changing how the car looks. Some films add slight gloss over bare paint.

Matte and satin film

Converts any glossy paint to a matte appearance without respraying.

Worth knowing:

  • Care differs — gloss enhancers and waxes are off-limits, as they create shiny patches on a matte surface.
  • Marks show more readily than on gloss, so cleaning needs more consistency.
  • Reverting to gloss means removing and reinstalling film, not polishing.

Coloured PPF

Combines colour change and protection in one layer — an alternative to conventional wrap that genuinely protects. The original paint underneath stays preserved, which helps resale value if you later return the car to its factory colour.

Quick comparison

  • Protection: effectively identical across all three — the difference is appearance, not performance.
  • Cost: gloss is usually lowest, coloured highest.
  • Ease of care: gloss easiest, matte most demanding.
  • Reversibility: gloss and coloured are simpler; matte requires reinstallation.

Practical advice

If this is your first film installation, start with gloss. You get the full protection benefit with no change to daily care and no surprises.
